Artist Statement
...Just recently I have been asked to do "portraits" of wedding dresses of brides from the past. A Mother's or a Grandmother's dress that have been put away as keepsakes. Somewhat ghostly, and oddly magnificent, I have been documenting these gowns to reconnect the hopes and dreams of the bride that once filled them. I also was asked to connect a dot with this work to the many bridal photo shoots that occur on the magnificent museum grounds of the McNay Art Museum (in San Antonio). This small show at the McNay was considered an "artist's response". On location bridal shoots are the latest trend, and it is an interesting contemporary parallel to this work I have been pursuing off and on for years. Since the hired photographers by the brides are doing the documenting it seemed only natural that I should shoot video of these "illusions" as they unfold. What was a celebration of a ceremony is now a ceremony of a celebration. Tradition has become fantasy and the representation of an illusionary ideal...
